“Someone Has to Slay the Dragon!”
Wednesday 08 October 2025 17:34 Between knights, princesses, crafts, and games, a medieval-themed camp in Sulzberg, Austria, brought the Bible to life for children. Faith, friendship, and fun came together in a week that the children—and leaders—will never forget.
“Someone Has to Slay the Dragon!” – and so Eline shares the Gospel with children
A camp full of knights, princesses, games, and stories—but above all, a week where faith, friendship, and fun came together.
It’s been a little while since I, Eline, returned from the Jungschar camp in Sulzberg, but the memories are still vivid. I’d love to share some highlights from this special week.
A Medieval Theme
Upon arrival, the children were welcomed by the leaders dressed as knights, princesses, and dragons. This year’s theme was, “Someone Has to Slay the Dragon!” The children were also encouraged to come in costume, and the campgrounds quickly resembled a fairytale medieval village.
Bringing Bible Stories to Life
Each morning, a Bible story was at the heart of the day. On one occasion, I acted out the story of Simeon and Anna with others—without words but full of expression. The moment they finally held baby Jesus in their arms left a strong impression. Later, I stepped into the role of a poor woman from Jericho, telling the story of Zacchaeus from her perspective—first my disappointment that Jesus didn’t come to eat with me, then my amazement that Zacchaeus returned four times what he had stolen. The stories came alive for the children in a very personal way.

Games, Crafts, and Fun
There was plenty of time for play and creativity. Using 35 kilograms of clay, the children made beautiful figures and tableware. Baking over the campfire often turned out surprisingly well! Medieval games and sports activities brought laughter, excitement, and a sense of togetherness.
Rain? No Problem!
Even when the weather didn’t cooperate, no one let it dampen their spirits. Under the large tent, we could eat, sing, and continue sharing stories. One highlight was the treasure hunt in Sulzberg. Dressed in costume, we explored the village, drawing lots of attention—which was exactly the point, as it allowed us to invite villagers to the farewell celebration. And yes, some of the locals actually came!
Campfire Moment
On the final evening, we reflected on the heart of our theme: Jesus defeating the dragon—the devil—through His death and resurrection. Around the campfire, I shared my personal testimony, describing a time of sadness and believing lies, and how Jesus set me free. That moment was very meaningful: anyone who is freed by Jesus is truly free.
A Grateful Reflection
What made this camp so special was the combination of faith, creativity, games, and friendship. Even though I initially knew few of the leaders, I immediately felt welcome. Everyone was kind, engaged, and sincere. It was wonderful to see God’s Word, prayer, and testimonies take a central place alongside all the activities. I look back on this week with deep gratitude. It was a camp to remember—and if possible, I hope to return next year!
