Europe 2021: A Missiological Report

By Jim Memory

Europe 2021. What is really going on? How is Europe changing? What can we expect to see in the future?

These are just some of the questions Christian leaders in Europe need to tackle today. As a mission working in Europe, ECM is particularly interested in understanding the reality of Europe and identifying the threats and opportunities that lie before us. In this report, our Vision and Strategy Group leader, Jim Memory, has done a superb job of helping us to do this. Taking in the whole picture of Europe and being able to translate it into a readable, concise, and interesting report is quite a feat, and we are enormously grateful for the result.

We encourage you to download this report, read it, and share it within your networks. Happy reading!

Discussion Guide

This Discussion Guide accompanies the Europe 2021 Missiological Report. It seeks to help us all engage effectively with the report and the issues that it raises. The questions in this guide were devised by Jo Appleton, Dave Benson, Simon Marshall and Jim Memory.

Download the Discussion Guide

For each of the sections in the report, there is a set of questions. You may choose to reflect on them individually, use them as a basis for group discussion in your teams, and even in your churches. The questions for each topic come in three forms to help us to grow as reflective practitioners.

lookLOOK

The "Look" questions encourage you to look around at your context and see how this specific issue impacts your life, your church, your ministry, and the community around you.

reflectREFLECT

Spending time on the "Reflect" questions will help you to think more deeply about the implications of this topic for you and to consider some of the theological and biblical issues that are raised.

actACT

Thirdly, we want to encourage you to "Act", to consider what you might do differently after thinking about these things. What actions can you take as an individual, church, or in your ministry, to respond to this issue and to ensure that the Good News of Jesus is presented as clearly and relevantly as possible?

The Missiological Report and Discussion Guide are now available in six languages

"Jim Memory has done a great service to all involved in the changing face of mission in Europe. He tackles a broad range of issues and turns what might otherwise be dry and confusing statistics into a meaningful, informative, and challenging report. I pray that the Lord will use this to inform and encourage all of us as we seek to reach Europe with the Good News of Jesus."
Simon Marshall, International Director ECM International

"In a world full of data, it is surprisingly difficult to get insightful and reliable information on Europe as a mission field. Jim Memory has done us all a service by pulling together some of the key trends going on today on this rapidly changing continent."
Kent Anderson, British Director of European Christian Mission

"Insightful, thorough, relevant, and succinct! This report is a gift to our continent, and a must-read to any leader who wants to have a ‘bird’s-eye view’ of mission in Europe today."
Sarah Breuel – IFES Revive Europe Director

"Combining fascinating and timely analysis of social, economic, and political trends, with insightful and forward-looking missiological reflection, this report should be essential reading for all those who, in any part of the world, are concerned about mission in, from and to, the continent of Europe. Thoroughly documented from secular sources and theological expertise, this is the kind of resource that is increasingly needed for intelligent Christian engagement in our alarmingly changed world."
Chris Wright, PhD, Global Ambassador and Ministry Director, Langham Partnership
