There is a growing movement among churches to take a more active role in God’s mission in the world. They no longer want to simply give their people and resources (pay, pray and stay out of the way), but want to be personally involved (pay, pray and play). They recognize the importance of working together with mission organizations as equal partners. Through a coaching process, churches are helped to gain insight into their own missionary engagement. With the help of Missie 1:8, ECM shapes this process.
What passion drives this coaching process?
Coaches help the church discover and use its unique calling and gifts to make Jesus Christ known to all nations, in cooperation with others. The missions coaching trajectory is an opportunity to turn passion into achievable goals and strategies for the glory of God.
What does the coaching trajectory look like?
The missions coaching process offers a tailor-made trajectory, taking into account the unique gifts, talents, and passion of the church. A missions coach provides a clear picture of God’s mission and the God-given role of the church in it. The missions coach helps the church develop a specific strategy, in cooperation with ECM or one or more other mission organizations, depending on the vision established during the process.
How are the goals achieved?
The missions coaching trajectory is one way to turn passion into a plan. The process consists of three modules: Discover, Design, and Do. The first part provides an overview of the current missionary engagement and then focuses on formulating a mission and vision. The second part translates the vision into an actionable plan. The final part implements what has been put on paper. Once the plan is in action, the implementation is evaluated after some time, allowing for adjustments if necessary. The trajectory consists of eight to nine sessions, held every five to six weeks. If time within the church is limited, a shortened version is available. This GPS-trajectory covers three sessions.
This process is helpful in providing insight into the church’s own missionary engagement. These trajectories are embedded in biblical teaching on mission, and a brief update will also be given regarding global mission work. In addition, practical tips will be shared to increase involvement in mission within the church. Alongside this trajectory, workshops address specific themes, such as setting up a communication plan, establishing support teams, cultural research, increasing engagement, and more. Specific research into a country or people group is also possible.
