Make a difference in Spain

Introducing Spain
Franco’s death in 1975 brought an end to the Fascist era and with the arrival of democracy in 1977 a new era of religious liberty and economic growth came to Spain. Since then Spain has modernized its economy and liberalized its politics in a transformation that is quite breath-taking. Today, secularism, postmodernism, and a moral decline are present in the society. Spain is a country with a high percentage of drug addiction, broken marriages and added to this: religious indifference.

Spiritual Climate

In the history of Catholic Spain from the Reformation to the present day, there have been only two brief periods of relative liberty for Evangelicals. It was not until 1977 that a good measure of religious liberty was granted. Today Spain has freedom of expression, politics and religion unparalleled by any other period in its own history. Spain is wide open to the "bad" as well as to the "good" which freedom can bring and she never needed missionaries more than she does today to preach the Good News. If spaniards are not reached for Christ now they will be by the muslims or by the eastern religions or simply they will be part of the world that believes in consumerism. Now is the time to preach Christ because if we wait it will be too late.

Most people are still nominally Roman Catholic, but for the majority, this is as far as it goes. The Catholic Church has lost a lot of its influence since it is tainted in people’s minds by its association with the Franco regime and the tyranny of the Inquisition in the 16th century.  Over 30% of the population, although baptized, no longer claim any link with Catholicism,  and a further 40-50% are inactive. Although 79% profess to be Roman Catholic, 50% do not go to mass, 17% go only a few times a year and only 18% go every day.

During this time, evangelicals have grown in number from about 20,000 in 1970 to about 400.000 at present, a figure which does not include the Roma (Gypsy) churches which number about 80,000. This latter group has grown rapidly among its people and is now the largest evangelical body in the country, but is culturally isolated.

With the influx of new ideas, atheism and materialism, family influence is lessening, moral standards are falling, interest in the occult and drugs are being extended even to the smaller towns.  This is the challenge that lies before us: the needs remain enormous. Twenty eight of Spain’s 52 provinces have fewer than 1,000 evangelical believers, and there are still more then 7.500 towns with populations over 5,000 that have no evangelical witness.

ECM in Spain

Although ECM has had a presence in Spain from 1933 before the Franco era, real growth in the work did not begin until 1978 when the political situation allowed a church planting strategy to be implemented in Cordoba province.  ECM now has workers in Cordoba, Madrid and Castellon.

Cordoba
Our first objective in the province is to plant a church in each town with more than 5000 inhabitants and no evangelical testimony. This has been a great challenge to the believers in Cordoba and the ECM team. At present there are 6 places where the word of God is preached.

Seeking to give a visible answer to the love of Christ, the Good Samaritan association was founded in 1993 by ECM missionaries to rehabilitate drug addicts. The work has been richly blessed, has rehabilitated many, and brought many others to the Lord.

Madrid
A large part of the administration for ECM International is concentrated in the Spanish capital, Madrid. Here mission staff administer planning, development, equipping, training, pastoral care and administration in the service of ECMI field missionaries Europe-wide. Albania and Romania are places where Spanish teams have helped ECM missionaries.

Castellon
This is ECM’s most recent work, planting churches in cooperation with other mission agencies. Each year the Lord has graciously allowed us to reach new towns for Christ: El Grao and Onda. Now new towns are waiting to be reached- the most important towns first.

As in Cordoba we need more full time and part time missionaries. Evangelism, social work, young people’s and adolescents work, are all needed in the in the market places, churches, and other locations.

In the same way that ECM missionaries are dedicating their lives to spread the gospel throughout Europe, Castellon needs you.
